Teenagers

Teenagers are often considered difficult and hard to handle, especially in terms of fostering. As with all age groups this might be true for some children, but with the right approach looking after teenagers can be hugely rewarding.

It is important to remember that teenagers are still children and need the same guidance, support, and nurturing that all children need. The following are important considerations when caring for teenagers.

Education
Teenagers are often at a critical stage of their educational journey and will need support from their foster carers to reach their full potential. Foster carers also have a critical role in helping young people learn the valuable life skills that will carry them into adulthood.

Give them space.
A big part of being a teenager is developing a sense of independence and individuality. As a foster carer creating the space for teenagers to do this in a safe and supported home environment can be very rewarding.

Routine and structure
Creating a routine and structure that includes a teenager having clear roles and responsibilities within the household can really help young people develop independent living skills that will be invaluable as they transition into adult life.

Planning for the future
Helping teenagers identify goals and how to achieve them is part of enabling them to make a successful transition from foster care into independence.

Keep them safe
Being a teenager often involves some experimentation and a range of new experiences. As foster carers it is important that you let them know that they can talk to you about anything and ask for advice whenever needed. If they know you are always there when they need someone, this will help them feel safe and secure.
