Celebrating Diversity: LGBTQ+ Adoption Week
This week (4-10 March) is LGBTQ+ Adoption and Fostering Week, a great opportunity to remind everyone that diversity is highly valued at Fitzgerald Fostering. This year’s theme, ‘Different Together’, calls on more LGBTQ+ people to consider adoption and fostering – a theme that we strongly endorse.
A survey published in January 2024 by Pink News found that 32% of LGBTQ+ people are interested in fostering a child but 19% are “unsure if they would qualify because of their sexuality”. Being part of the LGBTQ+ community is not a barrier to fostering a child – everyone with a spare room who can provide a safe environment and the nurturing care necessary is eligible to be considered as a foster carer.
James Townend, Managing Director at Fitzgerald Fostering said, “We want to take the opportunity during LGBTQ+ Adoption and Fostering Week to highlight that people from any background, gender or sexual orientation can foster. As a leading Independent Fostering Agency in Berkshire, we are very proud to support LGBTQ+ foster carers. In addition, we provide training, significant resources and 24/7 support to enable our foster carers to create an inclusive and affirming environment for the LGBTQ+ young people in their care.”
